Best-kept
Churchyard Competition 2007
In spite
of the wettest summer for many years, the standard set by the 38 entrants to
this popular biennial competition was as high as ever, and a total of 14
churchyards emerged from the preliminary rounds. These were all visited on a
sunny day in August by Frank Hill and the vicechairman of the WFWI, Christine
Hickman-Smith, a tour-de-force made possible by the sterling effort of the
competition organiser, Rosemary Roberts, who drove the judges on a tour of
Worcestershire that lasted over ten hours.
The winner of the group for
churchyards under one acre was Abbots Morton with Hollywood (Friends' Meeting
House) and Wyre Piddle the runners-up. St Peters Church, Powick won the other
group and Hampton Lovett was the runner-up.
The awards ceremony was blessed with another fine day. Our
President, Lord Sandys, and the chairman of the WFWI, Christine Marriott,
planted a golden yew at Powick, watched by many representatives of both
organisations and the winning churchyards.A hasty re-run of the planting was
held for the Malvern Gazette photographer, who arrived just as we were about to
leave. Another ceremony, also well attended, took place at Abbots Morton, where
the winners had chosen three flowering shrubs. A most pleasant buffet lunch was
enjoyed in the village hall.
The only shadow over the proceedings was the news that
Rosemary had decided to retire as the competition organiser in view of
increasing commitments. No doubt her contribution over many years will be
rewarded in due course.
