Introducing the New President

As I am expecting to retire as Branch President in June this year at our A.G.M., this is the perfect opportunity to introduce my nominated successor, Mr. David Binnian. I warmly welcome him, as I am certain all members will do so too, recognising his enormous enthusiasm for Worcestershire's landscape and the role of CPRE in campaigning to protect it.

CPRE members will recall with much pleasure our 2002 A.G.M. held at Bodenham, near Wolverley, when we visited the Arboretum and Earth Centre which he had created over a period of thirty years since 1973.

Starting with a back-drop of three steep-sided natural valleys, containing trickling streams, dams and pools leading further down to a large lake, he gathered and planted over 2,600 specimens of trees, bushes and plants from all over the world to produce this harmonious and awardwinning landscape, to the delight of so many visitors. Nearby, the Earth Centre is one of the very few of its kind, giving challenge, interest and appreciation of the environment from a different standpoint.

David Binnian at Bodenham

Overlapping this major undertaking at Bodenham, he was Chairman and Director of the R. D. Turner Foundation's very successful restoration of the Arley Arboretum and Walled Garden, which had fallen into total neglect since the castle's demolition. The magnificent specimen trees forming the skyline, planted a century earlier by Lord Mountnorris, greatly enhance the landscape overlooking the River Severn and draw the eye to the beautiful Church of St. Peter the Apostle and Martyr at Upper Arley. This is Worcestershire at its most spectacular, much enriched by the late Sir Chad Woodward's care and planting, and now permanently endowed by the R. D. Turner Foundation as a visitor attraction. Another success for David Binnian.......
